AI Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights (AI-READI) Research Internship Program (August 2025-July 2026)

Overview

AI-READI is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) program, a large trans-NIH initiative to generate new datasets for advancing artificial intelligence (AI). The program includes a yearlong mentored research internship aimed at diversifying the future workforce at the intersection of data science/AI and the biomedical sciences. Interns will work on a mentored research project related to AI-READI at sites across the country under the mentorship of AI-READI faculty mentors, while also engaging in a didactic curriculum conducted throughout the year.

The program will include direct mentorship for interns from AI-READI investigators/faculty mentors at sites across the country, as well as opportunities for career development, research ethics workshops, and hands-on instruction in programming during a 2-week bootcamp held at UC San Diego. The internship is not remote, and interns may be required to relocate depending on which mentor they are paired with. This is a paid internship, with monthly stipends ranging from about $2200 per month for predoctoral interns to $4500-$5500 per month for post-doctoral interns.

Application Requirements

Applicants must have completed at least an undergraduate degree, but can be post-baccalaureate students, predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, medical trainees, or other allied health professionals.

The program requires full-time effort, and the applicant cannot be doing medical school rotations or other jobs concurrently. This is not a remote position, and you will be required to relocate depending on which mentor you are paired with.

Applicants are not required to have extensive background in programming but should demonstrate technical/quantitative skills and a willingness to learn.

Personal statement of career goals (word limit: 750 words) and 2 letters of reference from academic faculty members (have them email their letters to the program coordinator at ai-readi-internship@health.ucsd.edu by January 17, 2025).

Provide academic transcripts (unofficial is acceptable).

The program will include an in-person two-week bootcamp at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) in the summer. After bootcamp, interns will work on a mentored research project related to AI-READI at sites across the country under the mentorship of AI-READI faculty mentors.

US citizenship or permanent residence is not required to apply to the program, but you must be physically located in the United States by the start of the program in Summer 2025. The program will not provide visa sponsorship.
